Old School House Restoration
The old school house located at 1208 North Abington Road in the village of Waverly is in need of extensive repairs if it is to be preserved. The Waverly Township Board of Supervisors would like your opinion regarding the possible restoration of this building.
The structure was built in 1831 and served as the first school house in the village and later as a meeting place for the Negro church congregation of escaping southern slaves using the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. A number of residents believe that this building is of important historical significance to the village and should be preserved and restored.
The restoration of this building would involve a considerable amount of labor and funds to accomplish. Some of the funds could probably be acquired through grants or donations and some of the labor could possibly come from volunteers and other interested groups. Very likely this type of restoration, however, would involve the expediture of tax money. Before considering this type a project, the supervisors would like to have input from the residents regarding their feelings concerning the restoration and whether township funds should be commited to this endeavor.
